Description

This undated medal of Harry S. Truman is a standard U.S. Mint bronze presidential medal honoring the thirty-third President (1945-1953). Truman assumed office on April 12, 1945, following Franklin Roosevelt's death, and faced some of the most consequential decisions in world history within his first months as president. He authorized the use of atomic weapons against Hiroshima and Nagasaki, accepted Japan's surrender ending World War II, and navigated the transition from wartime alliance with the Soviet Union to the Cold War confrontation that would define the next four decades. Truman (1884-1972) was a Missouri haberdasher, county judge, and senator who was selected as Roosevelt's running mate in 1944 largely as a compromise between liberal and conservative Democratic factions. Once in office, he proved decisively capable: he established the Truman Doctrine committing the United States to containing communism, launched the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Western Europe, created NATO, ordered the Berlin Airlift, desegregated the armed forces through Executive Order 9981, recognized the State of Israel, and led the United Nations response to North Korea's invasion of South Korea. Truman left office in 1953 with low approval ratings but is now consistently ranked among the top ten presidents by historians. His plainspoken style and famous desk sign — "The Buck Stops Here" — embodied a no-nonsense approach to presidential accountability. The undated bronze medal captures Truman's bespectacled, determined countenance.
