Description
This undated medal of Grover Cleveland is a standard U.S. Mint bronze presidential medal honoring the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms — the twenty-second (1885-1889) and twenty-fourth (1893-1897) President. Cleveland's unique distinction means he is counted twice in the presidential numbering, and his medal represents both administrations in a single portrait. Cleveland (1837-1908) was a reform-minded Democrat who built his reputation on honesty and opposition to political corruption. As mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York, he earned the nickname "Grover the Good" for vetoing wasteful spending and resisting Tammany Hall's patronage demands. His first term saw the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887, the first federal regulatory agency. After losing to Benjamin Harrison in 1888 despite winning the popular vote, Cleveland won the rematch in 1892 — the only president to achieve this feat. Cleveland's second term was far more troubled, dominated by the Panic of 1893, one of the worst economic depressions in American history, and the Pullman Strike of 1894, which he broke by sending federal troops to Chicago. He also underwent secret surgery aboard a yacht in Long Island Sound to remove a cancerous tumor from his jaw, an operation concealed from the public for over two decades. The undated bronze medal presents Cleveland's sturdy, mustachioed features in the standard format produced for ongoing Mint sales.
