Description
This undated 3-inch bronze medal of George W. Bush (first term) is a 76mm display-format presidential medal from the U.S. Mint's program. The "1st" designation indicates this medal features the obverse portrait and reverse designs specific to Bush's first term (2001-2005), distinguished from the second-term medal that would incorporate updated design elements. The Mint has historically produced separate medal versions for two-term presidents, reflecting the different thematic emphases of each administration. George Walker Bush (born 1946) served as the forty-third President from 2001 to 2009. His first term was defined by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and their aftermath. The attacks occurred just eight months into his presidency and fundamentally redirected his administration's priorities toward national security, resulting in the invasion of Afghanistan, the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, and the passage of the PATRIOT Act. Bush also signed the No Child Left Behind Act and the largest expansion of Medicare since its creation through the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act. The 76mm bronze format provides a commanding display piece at approximately 3 inches in diameter, allowing the Mint's engraving work to be appreciated at generous scale. The first-term designation makes this medal a record of a specific period in the Bush presidency, before the Iraq War and Hurricane Katrina dominated the second-term narrative.
