Description
This undated medal features Benjamin Harrison, the twenty-third President of the United States who served from 1889 to 1893. Harrison was the grandson of President William Henry Harrison and the only president from Indiana. His administration saw the passage of the Sherman Antitrust Act, the McKinley Tariff, and the admission of six states to the Union. Harrison also oversaw the establishment of the first national forest preserves and signed legislation creating Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. Medal iconography provides insight into how Americans have understood and represented their history, with evolving artistic conventions reflecting changing cultural values and aesthetic preferences across different eras. Presidential portrait medals form one of the most popular collecting series in American numismatics, and this Harrison medal completes the set of Gilded Age presidents.
