Description

This undated bronze U.S. Mint medal of Charles E. Barber, cataloged as Julian PR-23, is a notable exception in the presidential medal numbering sequence — Charles Edward Barber was not a president but rather served as the sixth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1879 until his death in 1917. His inclusion in the Julian PR series reflects the extraordinary importance of the Chief Engraver position to the Mint's medal and coinage programs. Barber (1840-1917) was born in London, the son of William Barber who served as the fifth Chief Engraver. He joined the Philadelphia Mint as an apprentice engraver and succeeded his father in 1879, holding the position for thirty-eight years — the longest tenure of any Chief Engraver. During his career, Barber designed the Liberty Head dime, quarter, and half dollar (the "Barber coinage" of 1892-1916), the 1883 Liberty Head nickel, numerous commemorative coins, and countless medals. He was also involved in the controversial design disputes with Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Bela Lyon Pratt over Theodore Roosevelt's gold coinage reform. Barber's medal portrait captures the engraver's strong features and the dignified bearing appropriate to a man who shaped the visual identity of American coinage for nearly four decades. The bronze composition and undated format indicate this was produced for ongoing sale as part of the Mint's medal program. Julian PR-23 is a valued collectible for those interested in the institutional history of the Mint itself, rather than presidential portraiture alone.

Rarity Notes

Undated bronze U.S. Mint medal honoring the Chief Engraver rather than a president. Of particular interest to collectors of Mint history and Barber-era numismatica. Less commonly sought than standard presidential medals.
