Coin Details
Description
This Loyal National League medal (HK-874) is a piece cataloged in the monetary section of the Hibler-Kappen so-called dollar reference. The Loyal National League was a pro-Union organization formed during the Civil War to support the federal government and oppose Copperhead (anti-war Democratic) sentiment in the Northern states. The League was particularly active in 1863-1864, organizing mass meetings and distributing patriotic literature and medallic pieces to bolster Union support during some of the war's darkest months. The HK numbering system groups so-called dollars broadly by type: exposition and commemorative pieces in the lower numbers, with monetary, miscellaneous, and later additions in higher ranges. Lettered suffixes (a, b, c, d) typically indicate variant compositions or die states of the same basic design, while entries above HK-900 include pieces added in later catalog supplements.
Rarity Notes
This so-called dollar is generally scarce in the numismatic market. Examples are collected by specialists in so-called dollars and American medallic art.
