Description
This bronze medal from circa 1866 honors General George H. Thomas, one of the most effective Union generals of the Civil War. Thomas, a Virginian who remained loyal to the Union despite enormous personal cost, earned the nickname "The Rock of Chickamauga" for his steadfast defense at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, where his corps held the line while the rest of the Union army retreated in disorder. He later commanded the decisive Union victory at the Battle of Nashville in December 1864, which destroyed the Confederate Army of Tennessee as an effective fighting force. Thomas was respected by both sides for his integrity, tactical skill, and concern for his soldiers. The circa 1866 production date places this medal in the immediate post-war period when the deeds of Union generals were being commemorated in metallic form. Thomas's Virginian origins and Union loyalty made him a particular symbol of principled service during the national crisis.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. George H. Thomas medals from the immediate post-Civil War period. Thomas is less widely collected than Grant or Sherman but highly regarded by military historians.
