Description
This bronze token commemorates the Philippine Campaign of the United States Navy during the Spanish-American War and its aftermath. The American naval campaign in the Philippines, beginning with Admiral George Dewey's decisive victory at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898, established the United States as a Pacific power and led to American colonial administration of the Philippine Islands. The campaign involved significant naval operations including the destruction of the Spanish Pacific fleet and subsequent ground operations during the Philippine-American War that followed. This token was produced as a commemorative or veterans' keepsake for sailors and Marines who participated in Philippine operations. Military campaign tokens served as personal mementos of service in an era before standardized campaign medals were universally issued.
