Description

Sage's Historical token number 8 in copper depicts Old Hasbrook House, a Revolutionary War-era structure in the Hudson Valley region of New York. The Hasbrouck House in Newburgh, New York, served as George Washington's headquarters from April 1782 to August 1783, making it the longest-serving headquarters of the Continental Army. It was from this location that Washington issued the Newburgh Address in March 1783, defusing a potential military coup by unpaid Continental officers, and where he received news of the Treaty of Paris ending the war. The Hasbrouck House was designated the first publicly owned historic site in the United States in 1850, just a decade before Sage produced this token. Its preservation reflected the growing historic preservation movement of the mid-nineteenth century.

Rarity Notes

Copper striking. Washington's Newburgh headquarters has strong historical significance and collector appeal.
