Description

Sage's Historical token number 6 in copper is the second token featuring Frank Jaudon, paired with a different reverse die than the number 5 Jaudon token. The practice of muling the same obverse portrait die with different reverse building or landmark dies was central to the structure of Sage's series, creating numerous collectible die combinations. Jaudon's two appearances in the series suggest he was a financial backer or particularly close associate of Charles Sage in the token venture. The production of these tokens coincided with the broader Civil War token phenomenon of 1861-1864, when millions of privately issued tokens entered circulation to fill the void left by hoarded federal coinage. While Sage's Historical tokens were produced primarily for collectors rather than commerce, they share the manufacturing techniques and aesthetic sensibilities of the broader Civil War token movement.

Rarity Notes
