Coin Details
Description
The Chester A. Arthur Presidential Silver Medal honors the twenty-first president, who assumed office after the assassination of James Garfield in 1881. Struck in one ounce of .999 fine silver at the San Francisco Mint with a matte finish, this medal reproduces Charles E. Barber's original U.S. Mint medal designs. The obverse portrays Arthur in a distinguished left-facing bust with sideburns characteristic of his era, inscribed "CHESTER A. ARTHUR." The reverse features a laurel wreath surrounding the inscriptions "PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES" and "INAUGURATED SEPTEMBER 20 1881." Arthur's September inauguration date is unusual among presidential medals, reflecting his emergency succession following Garfield's death rather than a standard March inauguration. Despite entering office under a cloud of suspicion due to his ties to the New York political machine, Arthur surprised critics by championing civil service reform, signing the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883 that established merit-based federal employment. The medal became available August 8, 2024 at $90. Each medal measures 40.6mm in diameter and comes encapsulated with a Certificate of Authenticity.
