Description
The 2025 William Howard Taft Presidential Silver Medal continues the U.S. Mint's silver medal series honoring American presidents in chronological order. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver with a matte finish, the 40.6mm medal features Taft's presidential portrait on the obverse, adapted from the original bronze presidential medal design. The reverse carries the traditional John Reich "Peace and Friendship" design depicting clasped hands beneath a tomahawk and peace pipe, a motif used on presidential medals since the Jefferson administration. Taft, the 27th president (1909-1913), is the only person to serve as both president and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, appointed to the latter position in 1921 by President Harding. His presidency saw the establishment of the federal income tax through the 16th Amendment, the creation of the postal savings system, and significant antitrust prosecution that exceeded even Theodore Roosevelt's trust-busting record. The silver medal series, launched in 2018 with Washington and Adams, releases medals in chronological presidential order, with Taft's issue marking the continuation into early 20th-century presidents.
