Description

The 2022 Millard Fillmore "1850" silver matte finish medal honors the thirteenth President of the United States in the Presidential Silver Medal Program. Fillmore assumed the presidency on July 9, 1850, upon the death of Zachary Taylor, and served until March 4, 1853. His presidency is most closely associated with the Compromise of 1850, a package of five bills that temporarily defused the sectional crisis by admitting California as a free state, organizing New Mexico and Utah territories with popular sovereignty, abolishing the slave trade in Washington, D.C., and enacting a stronger Fugitive Slave Act. Fillmore's signing of the Fugitive Slave Act, which required Northern citizens and officials to assist in the capture and return of escaped enslaved people, earned him lasting criticism from abolitionists and is widely seen as one of the most morally consequential presidential actions of the antebellum period. The law intensified Northern resistance to slavery and contributed to the political realignment that produced the Republican Party. Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) rose from impoverished origins in upstate New York, apprenticed to a cloth-maker before studying law and entering politics. He was the last Whig president, and after failing to secure the Whig nomination in 1852, he ran as the Know-Nothing (American Party) candidate in 1856, carrying only Maryland. He also dispatched Commodore Matthew Perry's expedition to Japan, opening that country to Western trade. The .999 fine silver matte finish medal captures Fillmore's dignified bearing in this chronological series.
