Description
This 2018-W medal from the West Point Mint is the Army entry in the WWI Centennial Medal Program. The U.S. Army was the dominant American military force in World War I, growing from fewer than 130,000 soldiers in 1917 to over four million by the armistice. The American Expeditionary Forces under General John J. Pershing fought decisive engagements at Saint-Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne, the latter being the largest military operation in American history at that time. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. The West Point mint mark is particularly appropriate for the Army medal, as the United States Military Academy at West Point has trained Army officers since 1802.
