Description
This 2018-P medal from the Philadelphia Mint is the Navy entry in the WWI Centennial Medal Program. The U.S. Navy played a critical role in World War I, conducting convoy escort operations across the Atlantic that broke the German U-boat campaign threatening to starve Britain into submission. The Navy also deployed a fleet of subchasers and laid the massive North Sea Mine Barrage — over 56,000 mines — that helped contain the German submarine fleet. The study of medal production techniques — from die engraving and planchet preparation through striking and finishing — reveals the intersection of artistic vision and industrial manufacturing that characterizes the medallic arts. The digital documentation of medal collections through high-resolution photography and online databases has expanded research capabilities and made attribution resources available to a broader audience of collectors and scholars. American naval forces' arrival in European waters in 1917 fundamentally shifted the balance of power at sea.
