Description
This 2015 silver medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Pacific Coast Numismatic Society (PCNS), the oldest coin club in the western United States. PCNS was founded in San Francisco in 1915 by Farran Zerbe, a towering figure in American numismatics who came west to supervise the United States Mint exhibit at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. At the time of PCNS's founding, there were no other numismatic organizations in the American West, making it a pioneering institution that brought organized coin collecting to the Pacific region. The centennial celebration included a banquet held on September 26, 2015 at the Argonaut Hotel in San Francisco, and the issuance of commemorative medals in three compositions: silver, brass, and copper. The silver version represents the premium tier, befitting a milestone anniversary for an organization with a century of continuous service to numismatics. PCNS holds monthly meetings in San Francisco and publishes scholarly papers covering everything from ancient coins to San Francisco tokens and exonumia, maintaining the educational mission Zerbe established at the society's founding during the great 1915 exposition.
Rarity Notes
