2015 Medal Selma to Montgomery Bronze
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 2015 bronze medal honors the participants in the Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965, one of the most pivotal events in the American civil rights movement. The three marches, culminating in the 54-mile trek from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in March 1965, demanded voting rights for African Americans and were met with violent resistance on "Bloody Sunday" when state troopers attacked peaceful marchers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The marches directly led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. Congress awarded a Congressional Gold Medal to all march participants in recognition of their courage and their contribution to American democracy.
