Description
This 2014 bronze medal at 38mm honors the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders, the 80 volunteer airmen who carried out the first American bombing raid on the Japanese home islands on April 18, 1942. Led by Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Doolittle, sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet in a mission that was militarily modest but psychologically transformative — proving that Japan was vulnerable to American airpower just four months after Pearl Harbor. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. Congress awarded the Doolittle Raiders the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014, by which time only a handful of the original 80 raiders survived.
