Description

This 2009 three-inch medal commemorates the New Frontier program, honoring the spirit of exploration and innovation associated with President John F. Kennedy's vision for American advancement in space, science, civil rights, and international leadership. Kennedy coined the term "New Frontier" in his 1960 acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, declaring that Americans stood on "the edge of a New Frontier — the frontier of the 1960s, a frontier of undocumented opportunities and perils." The three-inch format is the standard U.S. Mint large commemorative medal, approximately 76mm in diameter. The 2009 production date marks the 40th anniversary year of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969 — the greatest achievement of Kennedy's space program vision and arguably the greatest exploration feat in human history. This medal captures the aspirational spirit of an era when Americans believed they could accomplish anything through determination and ingenuity.
