Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 2008 bronze medal honors Constantino Brumidi, the Italian-American artist known as the "Michelangelo of the United States Capitol" for his extensive fresco work in the U.S. Capitol Building. Congress awarded Brumidi a posthumous Congressional Gold Medal in 2008, recognizing his decades of artistic contributions including the Apotheosis of Washington in the dome of the Capitol Rotunda and the frieze depicting American history that encircles the rotunda wall. Brumidi, who emigrated from Italy in 1852, spent 25 years decorating the Capitol, a labor of love that he continued until his death in 1880. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. This bronze duplicate honors his artistic legacy.
