Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 2007 medal honors Dr. Michael DeBakey, the legendary cardiovascular surgeon whose innovations saved countless lives over a career spanning more than seventy years. Congress awarded DeBakey the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007, recognizing his development of the roller pump for open-heart surgery, the first successful coronary artery bypass, pioneering work on artificial hearts, and his transformation of the Baylor College of Medicine into a world-class medical center. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. DeBakey operated on more than 60,000 patients and trained two generations of cardiovascular surgeons who carried his techniques worldwide.
