Description
This silver inaugural medal for George W. Bush's first inauguration in 2001 was produced by the Medalcraft Mint. Bush's inauguration on January 20, 2001 followed one of the most disputed elections in American history — the 2000 contest against Al Gore was decided by the Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore after weeks of recounts in Florida. The Medalcraft Mint, a Wisconsin-based private medal producer, created inaugural medals for multiple presidencies. Bush entered office pledging to be "a uniter, not a divider" and promoting a domestic agenda of tax cuts and education reform. American political campaign medals and tokens constitute one of the richest collecting areas in numismatics, documenting every presidential contest from the nation's earliest elections through the modern era in tangible metallic form. Less than eight months later, the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks would transform his presidency into a wartime administration focused on the War on Terror, the invasion of Afghanistan, and eventually the Iraq War.
