Description
The 1982 American Arts Gold Medallion featuring Louis Armstrong is a half-troy-ounce gold piece honoring the New Orleans-born trumpet virtuoso and vocalist who became the most influential musician in the history of jazz. Louis Daniel Armstrong (1901-1971), known universally as "Satchmo," transformed popular music through his improvisational genius, gravelly singing voice, and magnetic stage presence. His recordings from the 1920s Hot Five and Hot Seven sessions are considered foundational documents of jazz, and his later career as a worldwide ambassador of American music made him one of the most recognized figures of the twentieth century. The obverse features Armstrong's portrait with his trademark broad smile, capturing the warmth and exuberance that defined his public persona across five decades of performing. The inscription LOUIS ARMSTRONG and the date 1982 frame the portrait. The reverse depicts Armstrong in his element — performing with his trumpet, the instrument he elevated from a supporting voice in New Orleans marching bands to the premier solo vehicle of jazz expression. HALF TROY OUNCE OF GOLD identifies the precious metal content. Armstrong's selection for the 1982 half-ounce issue paired him with architect Frank Lloyd Wright on the one-ounce piece, continuing the program's pattern of honoring Americans whose creative achievements transcended their specific disciplines. Armstrong crossed racial barriers throughout his career, performing for integrated audiences and using his celebrity to advance civil rights causes, though his approach was sometimes criticized as too conciliatory by younger activists. His rendition of "What a Wonderful World" (1967) remains one of the most frequently played recordings in history.
Rarity Notes
Total mintage approximately 409,098 pieces — the highest of any half-ounce issue in the series, reflecting the broad popular appeal of Louis Armstrong. Despite the relatively high mintage, many were melted from unsold Mint stock.
