Description

The 1981 NASA Columbia medal in brass commemorates the maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1), which launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 12, 1981 — exactly twenty years after Yuri Gagarin's historic first human spaceflight. Commanded by John Young, a veteran of four previous spaceflights including the Apollo 16 lunar landing, and piloted by Robert Crippen on his first spaceflight, Columbia orbited the Earth thirty-six times over fifty-four hours before landing at Edwards Air Force Base on April 14, 1981. The obverse depicts the Space Shuttle Columbia, the first reusable spacecraft to reach orbit and return successfully. Columbia was the heaviest of the five operational orbiters, built with an Approach and Landing Test heritage that included structural test articles. The distinctive external tank and solid rocket booster configuration is rendered showing the vehicle in its launch profile. The date 1981 and NASA-related inscriptions identify the commemorative purpose. The reverse carries additional mission details and imagery celebrating the dawn of the Space Shuttle era. At 38.3mm in diameter with a plain edge, this brass medal is larger than the standard 38mm U.S. Mint medal size. The STS-1 mission was a triumph of engineering audacity — Columbia was launched on its first orbital flight with a crew aboard, without the unmanned test flights that had preceded every previous American spacecraft's maiden voyage. The decision to fly the shuttle with astronauts on its first mission reflected both confidence in the vehicle and the absence of a practical alternative for testing the orbiter's landing capability. Columbia would go on to fly twenty-seven additional missions before its tragic loss during reentry on February 1, 2003.

Rarity Notes

Private commemorative issue in brass marking the STS-1 mission. Produced in limited quantities. The brass composition and plain edge suggest a mid-tier collectible aimed at space enthusiasts rather than numismatic investors.
