Coin Details
Description
This gilt bronze medal by Medallic Art Company commemorates the first inauguration of Ronald Reagan on January 20, 1981. The gilt bronze composition — bronze with an applied gold wash — creates a visually warm and prestigious appearance at a price point between standard bronze and solid precious metals. Gilding was a technique Medallic Art Company employed for special presentation medals, bridging the gap between the affordable bronze editions distributed broadly and the silver or gold versions reserved for dignitaries and premium collectors. Reagan's first inauguration was held on the West Front of the Capitol for the first time in history, a change from the traditional East Front ceremony. The new location provided a sweeping view of the National Mall toward the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, and the tradition has continued for every inauguration since. The gilt bronze format was often distributed to mid-level officials, party supporters, and inaugural committee members as a recognition piece with more visual impact than plain bronze. Medallic Art Company's gilding process was carefully controlled to produce an even, durable gold layer that would maintain its appearance over time.
Rarity Notes
