Description
This 18-karat gold medal by Medallic Art Company of Connecticut features George Washington in connection with the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations. Washington, as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first President, was the central figure of the American Revolution and naturally the preeminent subject for Bicentennial commemoratives. The 18K gold composition in a Washington Bicentennial medal represents the most prestigious intersection of America's most revered historical figure with its most significant anniversary celebration. Medallic Art Company had produced Washington medals throughout its history, and the Bicentennial provided the ultimate occasion for a Washington gold medal. The firm's Connecticut facility produced this medal during the period when MACO was handling an enormous volume of Bicentennial-related commissions from federal, state, and private sources. The 18K gold Washington Bicentennial medal would have been reserved for the most important presentations — to heads of state, senior government officials, or major Bicentennial benefactors.
