Description
This 1976 medal by Medallic Art Company of New York honors Daniel Chester French, one of America's most celebrated sculptors whose work defined public monumental art in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. French is best known for the iconic seated Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. (1920) and the Minute Man statue in Concord, Massachusetts (1875), but his prolific career produced hundreds of works for public spaces, institutions, and private collectors across the country. The 1976 Bicentennial year was an appropriate occasion to honor French, whose monumental sculptures embodied the civic ideals and national mythology that the Bicentennial celebrated. Medallic Art Company had a particular affinity for honoring fellow practitioners of the sculptural arts, as the firm's own medal-making craft was rooted in the same traditions of modeling, casting, and three-dimensional composition that French mastered at monumental scale. This medal represents a tribute from one branch of the sculptural arts to another.
