Description

Swoger catalog number D1976-3e. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia as part of the National Bicentennial celebration. The 200th anniversary of American independence in 1976 was commemorated with an extraordinary range of medals, coins, stamps, and events. The U.S. Mint produced special Bicentennial designs for the quarter, half dollar, and dollar coins, while also striking numerous commemorative medals for various bicentennial-related organizations and events. The celebrations included Operation Sail, a gathering of tall ships in New York Harbor on July 4, 1976, and the Freedom Train, a traveling exhibition of American historical documents and artifacts. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
