Description

Swoger catalog number D1976-1b. This medal was struck at the United States Mint facility in Denver to commemorate the centennial of Colorado statehood. Colorado was admitted to the Union on August 1, 1876, exactly one month after the nation's centennial, earning it the nickname "The Centennial State." The Denver Mint mark is particularly fitting for a Colorado statehood medal, as the Denver Mint has been a proud institution of the state since it began operations as a federal assay office in 1906. Colorado's history encompasses the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1858-1861, the silver mining boom that built towns like Leadville and Aspen, and the development of Denver as the commercial capital of the Mountain West. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.

Rarity Notes

Denver Mint strike for the Colorado centennial — particularly fitting provenance. Exact mintage not separately reported.
