1973-S Silver Medal D1973-2c, Cable Car Small
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1973-2c. This standard-size silver cable car centennial medal was struck at the United States Mint facility in San Francisco, as indicated by the S mint mark. San Francisco was the natural location for producing a cable car centennial medal, as Andrew Hallidie's cable car system was invented and has operated exclusively in that city since 1873. The San Francisco cable cars were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and are the only mobile National Historic Landmark in the United States. The system underwent a complete rebuild from 1982 to 1984, returning to service with restored cars on the Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason, and California Street lines. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. The San Francisco mint mark makes this a distinct collectible from the Philadelphia-struck versions.
Rarity Notes
Silver medal struck at San Francisco — particularly appropriate given the cable car subject. San Francisco Mint medals from this era are less common than Philadelphia issues. Exact mintage not separately reported.
