Description

Swoger catalog number D1973-2b. This 76mm silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of San Francisco's cable car system. The cable car was invented by Andrew Smith Hallidie, a Scottish-born engineer and wire rope manufacturer who was inspired to create the system after witnessing horses struggle and fall on San Francisco's steep, rain-slicked streets. The first cable car line opened on Clay Street on August 2, 1873, using Hallidie's system of underground cables powered by a central powerhouse. The technology spread to other cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Seattle, but San Francisco alone has preserved its cable cars in continuous operation. The 76mm silver format represents the premium issue in the D1973-2 cable car series. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.

Rarity Notes

Large-format 76mm silver medal β€” the premier cable car centennial issue. Silver composition and large size ensure limited production. Exact mintage not separately reported.
