Description

Swoger catalog number D1972-2d. This 76mm bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to honor the U.S.S. Constellation. The original Constellation was a 38-gun frigate launched in Baltimore in 1797, one of the first warships of the U.S. Navy. She served with distinction for decades, from the Quasi-War through the suppression of the African slave trade in the 1850s and 1860s. The vessel currently on display at Pier 1 in Baltimore's Inner Harbor draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and serves as a floating museum of early American naval history. The 76mm bronze format provides the large-diameter presentation at an accessible base-metal price. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.

Rarity Notes

Large-format 76mm bronze Constellation medal. Standard base-metal issue for public sale. Exact mintage not separately reported.
