Description
Swoger catalog number D1972-2c. This standard-size silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to honor the U.S.S. Constellation. One of the original six frigates of the United States Navy, the Constellation was designed by Joshua Humphreys, who conceived them as vessels powerful enough to fight ships of the line yet fast enough to outrun any vessel they could not defeat. Under Captain Thomas Truxtun, the Constellation distinguished herself in the Quasi-War with France, capturing L'Insurgente in 1799 and engaging the more powerful frigate La Vengeance in 1800 in an overnight battle that left both ships badly damaged. The ship currently preserved in Baltimore's Inner Harbor was rebuilt or replaced in 1854 as a sloop-of-war and served through the Civil War. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
