Description
Swoger catalog number D1972-1d. This gilt-brass medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia as a mounted memorial to Roberto Clemente. The gilt-brass composition — brass with a gold-toned surface finish — and mounted format distinguish this from the standard bronze issues in the D1972-1 series. The mounted presentation indicates this medal was intended for display purposes, as a desk piece or wall plaque. Clemente's legacy extends far beyond baseball: the Roberto Clemente Award, given annually by Major League Baseball to the player who best combines community involvement with playing excellence, bears his name. Numerous schools, parks, hospitals, and bridges across the United States and Latin America are named in his honor. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
Rarity Notes
Gilt-brass mounted format — an unusual presentation for U.S. Mint medals. The mounted configuration indicates smaller production runs. Exact mintage not separately reported.
