1970-P Medal Stone Mountain Small
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1970-P small medal from the Philadelphia Mint depicts Stone Mountain, the massive granite monadnock near Atlanta, Georgia, famous for the Confederate memorial carving on its north face. The carving, depicting Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on horseback, is the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world, covering three acres of the mountain's surface. The memorial was begun in 1916 by Gutzon Borglum (who later carved Mount Rushmore) but was not completed until 1972 by Walter Kirkland Hancock and Roy Faulkner. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. This 1970 medal was produced during the final phase of the memorial's completion, marking a project that had taken over half a century to finish.
