Coin Details
Description
This 1963 so-called half dollar, produced by Heraldic Art for the West Virginia Statehood Centennial, commemorates the 100th anniversary of West Virginia's admission to the Union on June 20, 1863. West Virginia's creation during the Civil War was one of the most dramatic episodes of American state-making β the western counties of Virginia refused to follow the state into secession, formed a Unionist government, and petitioned Congress for separate statehood. The Heraldic Art Company of New York was one of the premier private medal producers in the United States, creating commemorative pieces for cities, states, and organizations nationwide. The so-called half dollar format β approximately the size of a silver half dollar β was a popular medium for centennial and commemorative medals throughout the twentieth century. West Virginia's unique origin as the only state created by seceding from a seceding state gives this centennial medal particular historical interest.
