Description
This 1962 gold medal honors General Douglas MacArthur, one of the most decorated and controversial military leaders in American history. MacArthur commanded Allied forces in the Pacific Theater during World War II, accepted Japan's surrender aboard the USS Missouri, oversaw the occupation and reconstruction of Japan, and led United Nations forces during the Korean War until his dismissal by President Truman in 1951. The 1962 date places this medal near the end of MacArthur's life — he died in April 1964. Gold MacArthur medals were produced during a period of renewed appreciation for the general, who remained a polarizing figure for his insubordination during Korea but was universally admired for his Pacific War leadership and his magnanimous occupation of Japan. The artistic quality of American medals has evolved significantly over time, from the competent but sometimes crude products of early die cutters to the sophisticated sculptural compositions of modern medalists.
