Description

The 1960 Pony Express Founders medal in standard composition honors the trio of entrepreneurs — William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell — who established the Pony Express mail service in 1860. This base-metal version of the founders medal made the tribute accessible to a broader audience than the gold and platinum editions, allowing general collectors and Pony Express enthusiasts to acquire a founders-specific commemorative at a reasonable price. The founders of the Pony Express were an unlikely partnership. Russell was a flamboyant promoter with grandiose ambitions; Majors was a devout Christian who required all his employees to sign a pledge against profanity, drinking, and Sabbath-breaking; and Waddell was a cautious businessman who reluctantly agreed to the Pony Express venture under Russell's pressure. Their freighting firm was already the largest in the West before the Pony Express, operating thousands of wagons and employing thousands of teamsters to supply military forts and frontier settlements. The centennial celebration in 1960 brought renewed scholarly attention to the founders, whose individual contributions had become obscured by the romanticized legend of the riders. The medal serves as a tangible reminder that the Pony Express was not merely an adventure but a business enterprise — one that required enormous capital investment, logistical expertise, and managerial courage to operate across some of the most hostile terrain on the continent.

Rarity Notes

The base-metal founders medal was produced in larger quantities than the gold and platinum versions. Available to general collectors through centennial souvenir programs.
