Description

This bronze medal at 33mm diameter honors President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, produced circa 1934 by the United States Mint during the early years of FDR's transformative presidency. Roosevelt, who took office in March 1933 at the depth of the Great Depression, had already launched the New Deal by 1934, fundamentally reshaping the relationship between the federal government and the American people. The 33mm bronze format is the standard U.S. Mint presidential medal size. Roosevelt would serve an unprecedented four terms, leading the nation through the Depression and World War II until his death in April 1945. His image later appeared on the Roosevelt Dime beginning in 1946. This medal captures Roosevelt near the beginning of his presidency, when his optimism and decisive action — including the famous declaration that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself" — helped restore public confidence in American institutions. This is the earlier of two FDR Mint medals in this collection.
