Description
Philadelphia's Convention Hall held the celebration of the 250th anniversary of William Penn's arrival on October 24, 1932. An international radio and telephone hook-up carried speeches about Penn from the President of the United States, the Queen of Holland, the Kings of England and Sweden, the governors of New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania, and the mayors of Philadelphia, Chester, New Castle, Deal and London, and a pageant, Thou Philadelphia, acted out Penn's landing, his treaty with the Indians and his farewell to the city. The William Penn Commemoration Committee, which staged the event, issued official medals by Julio Kilenyi, struck by Whitehead & Hoag Co., in two sizes. HK-462 is the smaller size in bronze, 38 mm, with the armored Penn on one side and the land-purchase scene on the other; the silver version is HK-461.
