1926 So-Called Dollar HK-451, Sesquicentennial Copper
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Cataloged as HK-451, this 1926 so-called dollar honors Sesquicentennial. The 1907 Jamestown Tercentenary Exposition in Norfolk, Virginia commemorated the 300th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America, generating commemorative medals and the Jamestown gold dollar. Copper so-called dollars were produced in moderate quantities, offering event attendees and collectors an affordable commemorative at the time of issue. Original red copper surfaces are scarce, with most survivors showing brown patina. Miscellaneous national commemorative medals were produced by a wide range of manufacturers, from the U.S. Mint to local die-sinkers, covering subjects from presidential inaugurations to infrastructure milestones. Harold Hibler and Charles Kappen spent decades cataloging American dollar-sized medals, creating a reference work that transformed a scattered collecting field into an organized numismatic specialty.
Rarity Notes
Examples of HK-451 are common to moderately scarce among so-called dollar collectors. Interwar period commemorative medals survive in varying numbers depending on original mintage and subsequent preservation.
