1917 So-Called Dollar HK-448b, Vet. Corps of Artillery
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Lead closes the long list of materials for Thomas L. Elder's Veteran Corps of Artillery medal of 1917, which runs from thin-planchet silver (HK-442) through copper, brass, nickel-silver, white metal, aluminum, fiber and oreide to this piece, HK-448b. The occasion was the American entry into World War I. After Germany renewed unrestricted submarine warfare on February 1, the United States cut relations the next day and was at war by April 6, and in May the French and British missions under Joffre and Balfour arrived. Elder's corps acted as their guard of honor at New York's City Hall on May 9 and 11, as the reverse records. The obverse is the Confederation altar from Continental paper money. Lead, 38 mm, DeLorey 95.
