Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1912 gold medal is connected to the Titanic and the Carpathia, relating to the most famous maritime disaster in history. The RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg, with the loss of over 1,500 lives. The Carpathia, commanded by Captain Arthur Rostron, rescued 710 survivors. Gold presentation medals were awarded to the officers and crew of the Carpathia in recognition of their heroic rescue efforts, funded by donations from grateful survivors including Margaret "Molly" Brown. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. A gold Titanic-Carpathia presentation medal is among the most historically significant and valuable items in American maritime numismatics, directly connected to one of the defining events of the twentieth century.
