1910 Medal John D. Larkin 50th Ann. Bronze
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1910 bronze medal commemorates the 50th anniversary of John D. Larkin, referring to the Larkin Company of Buffalo, New York, one of the most innovative direct-mail retail businesses in American history. Founded by John D. Larkin in 1875, the Larkin Company sold soap and household products directly to consumers, bypassing middlemen. The company's headquarters, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1904, was one of the most important buildings in American architectural history. The 50th anniversary (of the company's founding in 1860 or of Larkin's birth) was commemorated with this bronze medal. The artistic quality of American medals has evolved significantly over time, from the competent but sometimes crude products of early die cutters to the sophisticated sculptural compositions of modern medalists. Larkin Company memorabilia is collected by both numismatists and Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts.
