Description
The 1909 Fulton so-called dollar (HK-375) is a commemorative piece from the Washington Monument & Miscellaneous National series. The Washington Monument's construction spanned 36 years (1848-1884), with the visible color change one-third up the obelisk marking where construction resumed after the Civil War with marble from a different quarry. Struck in gold, this piece represents the most prestigious and rarest composition for so-called dollars. Gold strikings were reserved for presentation copies, typically produced in quantities of fewer than a dozen for dignitaries and officials. Miscellaneous national commemorative medals were produced by a wide range of manufacturers, from the U.S. Mint to local die-sinkers, covering subjects from presidential inaugurations to infrastructure milestones. Collectors of so-called dollars pursue pieces by exposition, metal type, engraver, geographic region, or historical theme, with complete sets of certain exposition groups being particularly prized accomplishments.
Rarity Notes
HK-375 is rare to extremely rare in the numismatic market. Production quantities for early 20th century commemorative medals were typically modest, and survival rates vary significantly based on the original distribution method and the material's durability.
