Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 67mm silver medal honors Archer Milton Huntington (1870-1955), the immensely wealthy scholar, philanthropist, and founder of the Hispanic Society of America, and was issued by the American Numismatic Society (ANS). The medal is associated with A.F. Pradeau, dated 1945, indicating the recipient or the year of presentation. Huntington, adopted son of railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington, devoted his fortune to the study and preservation of Hispanic and Portuguese art and culture, founding the Hispanic Society in 1904 at its landmark building on Audubon Terrace in upper Manhattan. His wife, sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, created the famous bronze statues of El Cid that stand outside the Society's headquarters. The ANS, America's premier numismatic scholarly organization, produced medals honoring significant figures in the fields of numismatics, art, and philanthropy. At 67mm in silver, this is a substantial presentation medal reflecting the esteem in which Huntington was held by the numismatic community.
Rarity Notes
