1908 HK-351, T-II U.S. Navy Voyage Dollar

Description
Cataloged as HK-351, this 1908 so-called dollar honors T-II U.S. Navy Voyage. Pike's Peak commemorative medals celebrate the 14,115-foot Colorado summit that became a symbol of westward expansion after Zebulon Pike's 1806 expedition and the 1859 gold rush rallying cry 'Pike's Peak or Bust.' Bronze examples of so-called dollars offer collectors an excellent balance of affordability, condition, and aesthetic appeal. The alloy's hardness produces sharp strikes with fine detail that survives handling better than softer metals. Miscellaneous national commemorative medals were produced by a wide range of manufacturers, from the U.S. Mint to local die-sinkers, covering subjects from presidential inaugurations to infrastructure milestones. The HK numbering system established by Hibler and Kappen in 1963 brought order to hundreds of previously uncataloged American commemorative medals, many of which had been ignored by mainstream numismatic references.
Rarity Notes
So-called dollars from the early 20th century were produced in limited quantities for distribution at events or through numismatic channels. Examples of HK-351 are scarce, with surviving pieces ranging from well-worn pocket pieces to carefully preserved specimens.
