Description
A buffalo standing left, with "Souvenir" above it and 1901 below, makes a play on the host city's name on the obverse of HK-291. The reverse sets "May-November" and "Buffalo, N. Y." between scrolls in a central circle, with "Pan-American" above and "Exposition" below, and both sides have beaded borders. The 1901 fair drew more than 8 million visits, about 5.3 million of them paid, and dazzled them with electric lighting effects and buildings painted in many colors, which the HK account describes as the first broad use of color on a group of public buildings. Only one structure, of white marble, was built to last; it became the Buffalo Historical Society's library and museum. Brass with a reeded edge, 34 mm.
