Description
This 1898 silver medal honors Admiral George Dewey for the Battle of Manila Bay, the premium metal version among the many Dewey commemoratives. Silver Dewey medals were produced for collectors and as presentation pieces, above the more common bronze, white metal, and aluminum versions. The Battle of Manila Bay was one of the most celebrated American military victories, and Dewey's popularity generated an unprecedented volume of commemorative medal production. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. The silver composition reflects the importance Americans attached to the victory that established the United States as a major naval power in the Pacific.
