"1898" Medal Puerto Rico Occupation Bronze Restrike
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This bronze restrike medal commemorates the American occupation of Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War of 1898. On July 25, 1898, American forces under General Nelson Miles landed at Guanica on Puerto Rico's southern coast, beginning a brief campaign that resulted in Spain ceding the island to the United States under the Treaty of Paris signed in December 1898. The medal documents a pivotal moment in both American and Puerto Rican history — the transfer of sovereignty that ended four centuries of Spanish colonial rule and began the American territorial period that continues to the present day. As a restrike, this bronze example was produced after the original run, in the 20th century for the collector market. Spanish-American War medals and memorabilia experienced renewed collector interest during anniversary commemorations. The occupation of Puerto Rico was the least contested of the three major American campaigns of the war (alongside Cuba and the Philippines), but its historical consequences have been profound and enduring.
Rarity Notes
The restrike is scarce but more obtainable than original 1898 strikings. Spanish-American War medals generally have a dedicated collector following.
